SletHi Rikke,
SvarSletyou're right, the winter months are ideal for reading. It's dark, rainy, sometimes stormy and also romantic. You've bought a lot of very beautiful illustrated books this months. I think like you, a bookshelf is not complete without a couple of unread books. This is very convenient, because you can always find something that you still have to read. This month I followed your recommendations and bought "The Ocean at the End of the Lane" (I believe it was represented by you in 2013) and "Lips Touch" is ordered and I'll get it tomorrow. Many thanks you for your recommendations. And now is “sofatid” Neil Gaiman is waiting to be read.
PS: Regarding to book storage I’m a great sinner. After reading your article from 12.November I know I will have to rearrange
my books. :-)
Best regards Wolfgang
They certainly are. There's something about the cold that immediately makes me want to read. It is such a winning combination.
SletAnd yes. I much prefer to have read the books on my shelves, but a library wouldn't be complete if it didn't contain new adventures.
I'm so happy that you're going to read 'The Ocean at the End of the Lane'. It is one of my favorite books and among Gaiman's best work. Have you read anything else by Neil Gaiman? He is one of my favorite authors. Everything he touches is magical. 'Lips Touch' by Laini Taylor really is a stunning piece of work as well. It is lovely and so atmospheric.
Book storage can be hard – I don't abide all the rules myself, but I really find it to be something worth thinking about when arranging books :)
What a great novel, Gaimans 'The Ocean at the End of the Lane' , what a surprise. It is the first novel I read from that author. I’m deeply impressed and amazed. Reading page for page a thunderstorm was unchained and a lot of flashbacks into my childhood and youth were produced. I remembered on situations which were buried or forgotten a long time ago. I couldn’t stop reading.Already the preceding quotation from Maurice Sendak caught my attention. I know such situations.
SletAnd then: „I was not happy as a child, although from time to time I was content. I lived in books more than I lived elsewhere else.“ The same to me. But with a difference, I wasn’t able to read many books in the age of seven. At that time I knew a lot of fairy tales because they have been read to me from my parents. Later, in the age of between nine and ten I started to read a lot books and they became my best friends.
Neil Gaiman wrote such a psychological novel and combined psychology with philosophy. That is really good. He tooks me to a journay back to my roots to my childhood, to my youth.
„If I looked inward I would see only infinite mirrors staring into myself for eternity.“ Yes that is it. It remembers me on Novalis‘ „The Novices at Sais“ - whenever you remove the veil from the goddess you always see only yourself.
The novel is a mixture of real and fantastic events, which could happen so. I think on the influence of dreams, sometime nightmares in our lifes, even if we don’t want to admit it. Regarding this mixture there is a similar narrative „The golden Pot“ by E.T.A. Hoffmann which is laid in my hometown. Both novels are quite different, of course, although similarities can be clearly seen.
There are another great ideas – a duck pond can be an ocean, infinte - but all the water fits in a bucket and you can long be 11 years old, how Lettie Hempstock it was. Perhaps an ironic allusion to he time dilatation, the special theory of relativity from Mr. Einstein.
I’m far from finished with the book. It is one of those I will read again.
I could tell you more, but that would be to much for this blog.
Later I will tell you my thoughts about „Lips Touch“, but I need more time to read it, becaus it was only in English available.
Best regards Wolfgang
I'm so happy that you liked it. It is among my absolute favorites. Gaiman writes so atmospherically. Lyrical sentences wrapped in magical realism. It is thought-provoking and unnerving. I wonder how many things one can block and leave out from ones memory, disappearing into a dream-like black hole.
SletI felt exactly as you did when I read it. It was wonderful, truly wonderful.
"Lips Touch" is wonderful as well. Not nearly as profound as Gaiman, but still beautifully written.
Så fine bøger, især Narnia serien! :)
SvarSletJa, jeg knuselsker den også bare! :)
SletI want the Snow Queen so much! I am writing a letter to Jesus Child (Jesus Child brings Christmas presents in Slovakia ;) I saw the book at Biblioteka - the book expo taking place each November in Bratislava - and I was so enchanted when I caught a glimpse of it. Your new Alice's Adventures in Wonderland are also gorgeous and The Chronicles of Narnia... beyond words.
SvarSletWell, the Biblioteka expo in early November was a real book feast as well as hard time for my booklover soul and wallet. I acquired the Slovak translation of Emma by Jane Austen, my second owned book from our beautiful flowery Slovak edition of Jane Austen's books; I also acquired my very first Harry Potter books - the first and the second part so far - and I am going to read them soon, although I can't wait to start. I also purchased an off-price collection of works by one of our Slovak classics and one funny thing in form of a cookbook, with cute illustrations, of chic recipes for chic girls having little time. Sounds so much like me, the last part in particular. To my November book haul I also added an order of a fairytale Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. I hope I am going to publish my book haul post on my own blog soon, too :)
It is so beautiful!
SletAnd that book expo really sounds amazing. One can always use a new edition of Jane Austen. What a perfect purchase! I haven't read 'Ella Enchanted' yet. Let me know if it is any good!
Sure, I will ;)
SletLovely!
SletThese covers of Chronicles of Narnia are so gorgeous!! Are they available in English language?
SvarSletI love them too! And yes, in fact they are English :)
